Belgard Kitchen

Located a couple blocks East of Gastown, smack in the middle of Railtown you’ll notice a renovated warehouse.  There aren’t any big flashy signs, but if you look closely you’ll see the words Settlement Building, The Belgard Kitchen, Postmark Brewing and Vancouver Urban Winery on a charcoal block beside the grand wooden front doors.

All under one roof, you have 3 different offerings.  Vancouver Urban Winery which has 36 wines taps available for tasting and purchase.  Postmark Brewing offers 6 beers on tap, including an IPA, a Wit, a Stout, and a Hefe.  Belgard Kitchen is a restaurant with a menu with multicultural inspirations.

I ordered the Salmon Gravlax Hash, which came with house cured sockeye, crispy potatoes, avocado, beet puree and picked onions on a bed of arugula with poached eggs on top.  It was light as well as delicious and exactly what I wanted.  I ordered an extra egg so all 3 eggs were perfectly runny on top of my salad.

My husband ordered the Railtown Breakfast Wrap which had fried egg, bacon, avocado, arugula, sprouts, pickled onion, hummus all contained in a flatbread with a side a potatoes.  Although it wasn’t as colorful, my daughter and husband loved this dish even more than mine.

Since my daughter still takes an afternoon nap, we had limited time before having to go home to put her in bed.  We decided to change our plans to stay longer just to admire the décor after our meal.   From the high ceilings, vintage fireplace, wine barrels, wooden tables and to their tastefully arranged antiques, we were impressed.  We can’t wait to come back for lunch or dinner.

Flying Beaver Bar & Grill

The beaver became the official symbol of Canada since March 24, 1975 so it doesn’t get more Canadian than The Flying Beaver Bar & Grill.  They’re located at the North End of the No.2 Road Bridge in Richmond.  The Flying Beaver lets you sit and watch the arrival and departure of the Harbour Air seaplanes on the Middle Arm of the Fraser River.

Decor is a typical rustic bar with touches of flight or Vancouver related art.  There’s a  wheelchair pilot suspended in the air that I particularly liked.

I came here for brunch with my husband and daughter.  They sat us beside the windows on their enclosed patio near the back of the restaurant.  So between the crayons and watching the planes on the water, my daughter was entertained the whole time.  Although this restaurant is very kid friendly they also have certain sections to seat adults only.

We shared The Beaver Damn, which is (description from their menu) A big ol’ plate with wings, potato skins with bacon, steak bites, kale & artichoke dip, naan bread and tortilla chips.  Wash it down with some beer, or coffee in my case and it was the perfect lazy Sunday.

Kidtropolis

Kidtropolis is an indoor play city to satisfy children and adults of all ages.

20160424_125647_resized

This place is roughly divided into 3 areas. The big area has children sized shops such as a pizzeria, vet clinic, half airplane, police station, school, fire station, post office, gas station, farm house, theatre and a huge jungle gym. You can guarantee there is something for your child will gravitate to. I love the attention to detail that each building provides depending on the theme. For example, inside the post office you can empty the mailbox and out comes letters as well as packages to be delivered. If you look closely, you’ll notice one of the packages is addressed to Sparkle Tooth Fairy.

The second area is sectioned off for birthday parties. These are private rooms to sing Happy Birthday and to have food and cake. Children can access the play areas after or before as long as it’s within that 2 hour booking time. There’s packages and details on their website. Such a great idea!

The third area is the cafe with items such as pizza, chicken strips, fries, wraps, hot dogs, popcorn, muffins and etc. While the prices were quite high, ($9.50 for chicken strips and fries) I understand it’s a business and expected.

I visited Kidtropolis with my daughter, my friend and her 2 year old. We all played so hard and when we went home, we napped just as hard.

Railtown Cafe & Catering

This place is hidden amoungst all the other warehouses and shops in Railtown.  The staff here are friendly and helped me while I struggled to carry my child along with my diaper bag as well as my food to the table.  Much appreciated.

During my last visit, I tried their lemon blueberry muffin and the meat lovers quiche.  I remember thinking, what kind of muffin costs $3.75?  Well, apparently one of the best muffins I’ve ever had.  It was packed with lemon, blueberry, almonds and enough sprinkling of sugar on top.  The muffin top was crispy and crunchy, while the body of the muffin remained soft.  I was going to save it for later, but ended up eating half of it.

IMAG3044

The meat quiche was also probably one of the best quiches I’ve ever had.  This was clearly a meat lovers quiche since it contained an overflowing amount of bacon and ham.  On top of that, there were tons of vegetables such as tomatoes, spinach and onions.  I always struggle with ordering something meat lovers or vegetarian because the meat option never contained enough vegetables, but not anymore!

IMAG3041

Along with my food, my usual to go drink would be coffee, but I decided on their raspberry lemonade since it looked so refreshing.  That hit the spot and wasn’t too tart.

I wish Railtown Cafe was open on the weekends since I live and work in Burnaby on the weekdays.  Parking can be limited, but not impossible so give it a shot.

Stefanos Restaurant

This post is long overdue, but I didn’t want to not write about Stefanos Restaurant.  They deserve some recognition.

Stefanos is located in New Westminster on the main road, Columbia Street.  I have to admit I’ve never heard about the place, but word of mouth put this restaurant on the radar.

My friend, Shirley had her wedding lunch at Stefanos and everything was handled wonderfully.  They accommodated our group at the last minute as well, but everything went smoothly.  The wedding took up a little more than half the restaurant on the second floor.  We had microphones for speeches and a dance floor for people who want to let loose.

The food was delicious.  For my main, I had the roast lamb was tender, moist and seasoned well.  The roast potato was cooked well and flavorful.  Everyone had shared appetizers which featured a little of everything on the menu.  There were spanakopita, calamari, hummus and meatballs.

The staff were personable, helpful and full of smiles.  This alone made a huge difference.  From the time the reservations were made until the last person left the restaurant, we were treated very well.  Not many of the guests brought their kids, but there were plenty of high chairs if they were needed.  The restaurant is spacious so the kids could have played in an area of their own as well.

Stefanos is out of the way if you’re visiting Vancouver from out of town, but if you’re in the area, it’s worth checking out.

Sweet Cherubim

I’m not a person who craves Vegetarian food.  The dish almost always feels incomplete to me.  A salad?  Let’s slice some grilled chicken on that rabbit food.  Baked potato?  Let’s sprinkle some bacon on it.  However, I can make room for Sweet Cherubim from time to time.

Sweet Cherubim (2)  Sweet Cherubim (4)

Sweet Cherubim is a casual eatery, which shares the space with a grocery store.  Staring at their menu, it took me the full 5 minutes to make a decision since I kept changing my mind.  They have samosas, moussakas, lasagnas, burgers, sandwiches, rolls, subjis, rice bowls, soups, salads and many desserts.  (All of which are vegetarian)

Sweet Cherubim (1)  Sweet Cherubim (3)

I finally decided on the ‘Soup Special’, which came with a cup of soup, salad and rice.  This way, I can try a little bit of everything.  I chose the kale soup, quinoa salad and rice.  The 3 items looked tiny, but make no mistake, it is filling.  The food was tasty and healthy without being too greasy to weigh me down.  Next time, I’m going to try their subji, which I learned is a term that means ‘vegetable dish’.  Subjis can be dry, wet or in curry form and the ones at Sweet Cherubim looked delicious.

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt

Going for frozen yogurt is one of my favorite things to do after dinner.  So when my cousin, Betty requested we get dessert, I happily obliged.  This Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt location is fantastic since it’s close to my house and I have an excuse to walk there.  If you’re not around the area, there are plenty of underground parking as well as street parking.

l  IMAG0454

The self serve option is genius, along with the ability to try the different flavors by yourself until you can finally make that important life decision.  Which flavors and toppings do I want?  You’ll be able to take your time deciding without anyone bothering you.  My favorite flavor is definitely the salted caramel with crushed almonds, mochi balls and yogurt chips for toppings.  Don’t worry, if salted caramel isn’t your thing, there are usually at least 7 other flavors and a huge variety of toppings to choose from.

IMAG0457  IMAG0459

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt is a chain, but they’ve hired competent staff, provides a point card system, has fun/colorful decor and most importantly, serves delicious and unique frozen yogurt.  It’s no wonder there are more Menchie’s stores frequently opening all over North America.
